A VOICE BEYOND AN OPPOSITION IN NIGERIA:SEGUN SHOWUNMI REPRESENTING THE OPINION OF THE MASSES
Nigeria is a country with multicultural background, the uniqueness of this entity is in her university in diversity which indicates that what is acceptable in one culture is likely to be unacceptable in another, even with these differences, it is easy to marry diverse cultures without one undermining the other.
The democracy we practice in Nigeria allows for the people to freely express their opinions as it affect the government policies. For the past Eight years, the job of a viable opposition has been singled handed carried out by a voice who is known for calling government's attention to do the needful. This voice has not only represented the major opposition party, rather it has taken the yearnings of the people into consideration with the positive motive that only a united Nigeria can provide basic amenities of life for its citizens.
To this 'VOICE' the business or affairs of government should be carried out in a more transparent manner which will give room to accountability, checks, and balances.
Segun Showunmi has taken the job of being a Spokesperson to another level if compared to what Lai Mohammed offered when All Progressive Congress was in opposition. It was an era that APC believed that the only way to send PDP packing is to sow seeds of discords capable of bringing internal fracas that can lead to war.
There exists a clear cut difference between the way Segun Showunmi is handling his affair, instead of uttering or writing inciting comments that can truncate the fragile peace of the nation, he concentrated on issues, not attacking the government, pointing out lapses and equally providing solution to them.
It was the very first time in this country that, a major opposition will shelve his ambition to lead by all means and speak for the teeming population that is helpless and needed as heard.
Without being bias, average reasonable Nigerians will totally agree that Segun Showunmi has been discussing the issue of Nigeria so passionately that he looks like a crying bird, the agony of a wealthy nation that is in perpetual poverty and the uncontrolled killings were the reasons why Segun will always speak out even in the face of tyranny.
In my analysis of Showunmi's interviews, it is evident that he carried the wellness of the people of Nigeria in his heart more than the interest of few individuals.
In one of his interview via online media, Showunmi expressed his bitterness over the state of the nation, comparing the level of development in Dubai to the snail-like approach of our country.
Segun opined that the backwardness of our nation is a pointer to the fact that right people are not at the helm of affairs, and, until good crops of people are allowed into the business of governance the development we crave for will forever be a wishful thinking.
For the avoidance of doubt on the matured and experienced manner at which Segun performs his duties, sometimes ago, he wrote a powerful letter to President Muhammadu Buhari admonishing him to call his aides to order so as not to push the nation into unending chaos, for someone in opposition to have said this, one could say without blinking an eye that the continued existence of Nigeria is so paramount to him.
Another bold and meaningful step taken by Showunmi was the recent letter which had over 35 million readership, a letter he used to call the attention of Mr. President to the need to urgently put his cabinet together as the affair of the nation cannot be run like that of private enterprises.
It is good to state that Segun Showummi has made himself available to be a voice for the hopeless, his comment goes beyond tribal or ethnic affinity, he does not limit his watchdog activities to the ruling party, he has also extended this to his party, ensuring there is a levelling playing ground for principal actors; and, that those who are representing the party at various levels imbibe good moral behaviour.
There are various examples to back up my views that Showunmi has taken his voice beyond our political arena, no wonder, he lampooned men of God that have desecrated the temple of God, reminding them of the need for holy consecration, and total commitment to God's work.
In Ogun state where Segun hailed from, he has been the voice of unity, constantly saying that the killings, arsons, kidnappings and other act of insecurities should not be laid at the door posts of the Fulani herdsmen, rather they should be treated as acts of terrorism capable of leading the nation to another civil war.
While evaluating the success of Segun's contribution to National unity and development, the recent ministerial list released from the office of the President is an indicator that Segun's watchdog roles are yielding positive maximum results.
As Segun Showunmi takes his spokesman job beyond his political party, there is a need for other well meanings Nigerians to lend thier supports to this Egba born vibrant commentator in order not make him a lone voice in the wilderness of Nigeria.
If there is anything Segun Showunmi will be remembered for, it is his unique courage to speak out in the face of repression, depression, oppression and suppression. Segun has not been the voice of H.E Atiku Abubakar, he has become the voice of all Nigerians, more reason his open letter was rated the second widely read, after an Open letter written to the former President Goodluck Jonathan by the former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
In Conclusion, let us know that the level at which Segun is playing his opposition card is beyond the interest of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, it's in the overall interest of the common man on the street of Nigeria, in the overall interest of all of us.
