SHOWUNMI ADMONISHES PRESIDENT BUHARI ON ELECTORAL FAILURE IN NIGERIA

Image
*Note to President Buhari* Mr President, the unpleasant optics of horror from the Kogi and Bayelsa elections, is a bright Code Red, an emergency - the nature of a fire alarm in a hospital except that this is about the fundamental idea of democracy in our country. I am particularly concerned, and I think you should also be for I cannot imagine what this portends for our country Nigeria especially as we begin to march towards future elections. In future, should all parties in a democracy go and procure arms and soldiers in a bid to match the members of your party, the APC, and security agencies under your watch? Mr President,  how do you explain that this is happening under your watch?  I have reflected soberly as to what could be your reading of things. I am sure you have access to security reports indicating that all hell was let loose on the citizens you swore to protect while your police and other military agencies looked on, or in some cases, perhaps participated in thi...

SHOWUNMI CAUTIONS ADESHINA: URGES HIM TO SEEK WISDOM

Image
Shakespearean Femi Adesina A fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool. (William Shakespeare, As you like it) I suppose in this season when the Villa has become dangerous to the men of your tribe, re the now known as VP minimized, you have in an unprofessional and despicable manner tried to do a revisionist explanation full of sycophancy your warped reading of things around the 2019 election in which you consider there is anything to gloat about in one of the most disgraceful, embarrassing sham of an election, adjudged to be the worst in our history by those not drunk on filthy crumbs from the table of Buhari, mister man,  will you keep quiet and let serious minded historians speak some sense into you and by extension the nation. Do you pride yourself to have done noble on a process that has called to question the dignity and otherwise credibility of all institutions from INEC.,  to the security agencies, the judiciary not sparing the huge co...

BAYELSA: SETTING THE STAGE FOR FAIR POLLS

Image
On Saturday, November 16, 2019, the people of Bayelsa State will, through their votes, decide the person and party to lead them for another four years. Like Bayelsa, the game is getting hotter even in Kogi State, ahead of the governorship elections. Primaries have been concluded, and preferred candidates chosen by political parties. Though there are many parties in the race to the government house, the contest in Bayelsa will mainly be between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. However, having scaled through well contested party primaries, Senator Douye Diri of the PDP and Chief David Lyon of the APC still have issues to contend with as regards reconciling aggrieved members within their parties, who felt shortchanged in the primaries that produced them. But this has almost become a normal occurrence in recent Nigerian politics. The real deciding factor is how well the APC and the PDP are able to convince Bayelsans to give them the mandate...

PDP, APC STRUGGLE FOR THE SOUL OF BAYELSA

Image
Citizens of the oil-rich Bayelsa State are getting set to elect a new governor come November 16, 2019, as the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson, is rounding off his second term in office. Unlike in the past governorship elections in the state, anxiety is thick in the air and is visible in the nook and cranny of the state, especially among the supporters and leaders of the two major political parties. Traditionally, Bayelsa is a known Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state and political observers and watchers of political events in the country would give any election in the state to the party. However, the result of the March 2019 National Assembly Elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) made great inroads into the state, has thrown permutations on the result of future election in the state open. Thus, as the preparation towards the election has reached a feverish level, the APC leaders are boasting that they will consolidate on the gains of the March 2019 election whil...

NIGERIA @ 59:SEGUN SHOWUNMI RAISES HOPE OF NIGERIANS, CALLS FOR A UNITED NATION

Image
Independence Day Message By Segun Showunmi Dear Nigerians, The occasion of this Independence Day must cause us to reflect on genuinely building the nation for the benefit of those here now and for the future generation. What shall the next Generation say of us if we fail to dedicate ourselves to becoming the hope, not just of Nigeria, but of Africa, with the audacity to find what works for us to the benefit of all humanity? While preparing the stage for purposeful leadership and growth enablers, we must reflect on the fact that between 1914 and 2019, we have had 105 years of an amalgamated country; and from 1960 to 2019, we have had 59 years of self rule, which we call Independence. But I would ask: has Nigeria been as independent as it ought to be, especially from the thinking around the idea of nationhood. We must reflect on all we have endured from coups and counter coups, through a devastating civil war that seems not to have settled the issues of nationhood brought to...

WE'RE PROUD OF OUR SYMBOL

Image
We're proud of our Symbol By Segun Showunmi The decision to go to court on this issue of a stolen mandate in the February 2019 presidential election was a necessary sacrifice that a leader of the mould of Atiku Abubakar had to make, not only to claim his mandate, but also to free Nigeria and Nigerians from the perilous consequences of allowing our country to sink under an avoidable situation of bastardised democracy. This decision was not made out of naivety; Atiku was not oblivious of all the tendencies that could play out, especially in the Nigeria that has emerged under Buhari and his ilk, neither was he unmindful of the burden of going it almost alone as with the case in situations like this where true to type people are quick to show up when all looks rosy and immediate personal benefit is in sight, but stay on the fence or use the door when it matters most! Atiku Abubakar went on this journey because, all considered, it was the right thing to do in the interest of our...
